Safety Awareness Campaign to DYT members, Chukha Dzongkhag

Electricity Services Division, BPC, Phuentsholing have conducted Public Safety Awareness Campaign at DYT level during the 24th DYT session under Chukha Dzongkhag on 6th May, 2010. During the awareness campaign, all the DYT members (Gups & Mangaps) and Sector Heads of the Chukha Dzongkhag lead by Dasho Dzongda, CDA Chukha, Dasho Dzongrab, CDA Chukha & Daho Drungpa, Phuentsholing Drungkhag were present.

During the introduction note it was  informed that BPC is committed to helping the general public use electricity safely. That’s why BPC is providing helpful ideas for keeping your family, your home and your business safe from electricity-related accidents. They were briefed on the common hazards and possible methods for prevention of electrical accidents.

During the awareness program, the participants were briefed mainly on the following issues:

A. Outdoor safety (Safety Related to Transmission line, Distribution line & substations)

  1. Take extra care when working near overhead power lines
  2. Don’t Climb or play in trees where there are overhead wires nearby
  3. Don’t plant trees or bamboos near power lines
  4. Don’t touch an overhead wire with a pole, stick or other metal objects
  5. Never climb Utility poles or towers
  6. Don’t throw anything at wires or electrical equipments and don’t fasten things or animals to utility poles and towers
  7. Never touch a downed wire
  8. Avoid playing near the substations or lines
  9. Fences & warning signs for your protection

B. Indoor Safety (General Home Safety Tips)

  1. Don’t mix Water and electricity. If an electrical cord or appliances is faulty, water will conduct the electricity and increases the risk of shock.
  2. Don’t work on light fixtures or appliances without unplugging them or switching off the power.
  3. Never put your fingers in a light bulb sockets
  4. Don’t poke anything into an electrical outlets
  5. Don’t use water to put out an electrical fire
  6. Don’t touch someone that is being shocked until the electricity has been turned off
  7. Don’t use locally made (wooden) immersion rod water heaters. Instead use proper immersion water heaters.
  8. Always buy and use genuine and good quality electrical fittings & wires. These products are safe to use and usually last longer
  9. Use MCB and ELCB for protection
  10. Never use hairdryer or play an electrical radio or television near a bath tub or sink
  11. Don’t touch an electric switch with wet hands
  12. Never overload outlets with too many plugs

The above points were deliberated using power point slide shows and also  the BPC motion cartoons were shown.
