The Royal Government’s mandate to reach electricity for all by 2013 gave BPC, particularly Rural Electrification Department, an opportunity to walk the last mile. It indeed gave an opportunity to set foot in the remotest of the places and experience the reality.

The Project Manager and the site Engineer accompanied JICA Bhutan Official to monitor the progress the works. The team travelled from Jinkana (Haa) to Dorokha (samtse) thru Gakidling (Haa) from April 28-May 5, 2012.

The site is extremely difficult since the RE materials have to be transported from Haa across Tegola Pass which remains snow capped for the whole winter. In summer, it rains almost every day. To reach a pole (MV) to the first village (Dorothasa), it takes nearly 4-5 days with 6 men for each set. In financial terms, it costs about Nu. 15,000 per MV pole in head-loading.

The contractor for package E1 is making all his effort focusing mainly to shift the MV materials first. Stringing works for Dorithasa village has been completed. We also had public consultation requesting their participation in at least shifting the heavy materials since the foreigners do not have the capacity in such terrain.
