Rural Electrification Department

Rural Electrification Department (RED) is responsible for construction of medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) electricity distribution infrastructure by grid extension and ultimately providing service connections to rural areas. The Royal Government of Bhutan has a target to provide “Electricity for All by 2013”. In order to achieve this target, BPC has been entrusted with the responsibility of providing electricity service connections to over 40,000 rural households during the 10FYP period.

The major source of fund for Rural Electrification Projects during the 10FYP is from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) loan and the generous grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The department has offices in the following places to supervise and monitor the rural electrification (RE) activities all over the country.

  3. 3. Rural Electrification Construction Division, Gelephu
  4. 4. Rural Electrification Construction Division, Tsirang

  6. 6. Rural Electrification Construction Division, Thimphu

The RE civil works are being implemented by outsourcing to Local Bhutanese Contractors. To assist the Divisions in carrying out the RE activities, they have Sub-Divisions under them as follows:
