Bhutan’s abundant hydropower potential (32,600 MW) has driven its economic growth, achieving 99.97% electrification. However, energy security remains a challenge, especially during the dry winter when demand peaks and imports from India are required. Bhutan is prioritizing diversification of energy sources, including solar, wind, and hydrogen, alongside hydropower. Bhutan Power Corporation Limited (BPC), responsible for transmission and distribution, faces a projected Nu. 61 billion investment need over 15 years for transmission infrastructure, especially with growing renewable energy integration. Historically, government-funded transmission is now shifting, requiring BPC to secure its own financing, including debt of up to Nu. 48 billion. Smart grid technology adoption, although costly, is essential to enhance grid efficiency and resilience, with BPC advancing systems like SCADA and Advanced Distribution Management System and Metering Infrastructure.
